A few months ago I witnessed a friend of mine sitting at the shredder with a large stack of papers. The stack, about six inches talk, was comprised mostly of old bank statements, credit card reports, etc. Reasonable stuff to shred. Mostly.
However, also buried within this stack was a delicate hand drawn map of some backcountry ski area in the Sierras that a buddy had given him over a decade ago. At first I was completely mesmerized by the coolness of this hand drawn artifact... the trees, detailed notes, and slope nuances all said that someone spent some serious time working on this thing. Then my reaction turned to a more nostalgic sadness as I realized that my buddy was about to shred this thing that he had held onto for years. It seemed wrong to allow the map to die amongst an undistinguished pile of shredded bank statements. So more befittingly, I persuaded him to submit it to Backcountry Magazine... and here it is, immortalized properly as Backcountry's February 2010 Letter of the Month.
