The answer is Skateistan, a privated funded NGO based in Kabul, Afganistan. (This is what happens when skaters sit around watch CNN, smoke too much, get inspired to change the world and turn out to be very talented fundraisers...) But in all seriousness, Skateistan wins the award for the coolest NGO ever. It all started in 2007 when two Australians with their skateboards where mobbed by local Afgan kids eager to try this curious sport for themselves. What started with three boards and two instructors has since grown—in just three short years—to an all-inclusive skatepark and educational facility on 5428 square meters of land donated by the Afghan National Olympic Committee. An outdoor section has been designed by Convic Design and construction is planned to begin in fall 2010.
