All I can say is WOW. Time-lapse video of mudslide in Snake River Canyon near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This 47-second video captures 30 minutes of movement of the slide, courtesy of Wyoming Department of Transportation. The slide is moving at a rate of about one foot per minute with an estimated 40,000 cubic yards of material currently covering the highway to depths of up to 40 feet.
As you can see above in the video and below on the map, this road closure is likely to be closed for awhile... presenting a conundrum for rafting companies who can't run trips on the whitewater section of the Snake. Moreover, the road closure classically illustrates the problematic nature of having to commute to Jackson for work and our glaring need for affordable housing solutions within Teton County. The slide closed the road four days ago and has since entirely engulfed the road and reached the river. WDOT is now saying it might be weeks before they will be able to clear and secure the road...
