08.26.11 Steve Jobs at 23

By Chris D.

This week, one of the last true icons of modern technology announced his official step out of the limelight — passing the proverbial torch of leadership to the next generation. Although not a shock, Steve Jobs resignation from Apple is a major turning point for technology and popular culture. Credited for igniting the revolution that integrated good design and technology, as well as driving massive cultural shifts in pop culture (iTunes + iPod), Jobs was one of the last old school tech cowboys still at the helm of his company; leading in an era that bared no resemblance to that of when he began.

Besides remembering Jobs for his crystal-ball-esque ability to produce winning product after winning product, will be his poise and cool confidence in front of large audiences and cameras.

Which is why I love this video so much...

This rare video from 1980 shows a very nervous 23-year-old Steve Jobs in what may be his first-ever television appearance. In the video, Jobs is amazed that he can see himself on camera as technicians prep him for the interview. He delightedly proclaims: “God look at that! Look at that! I’m on television!” After a few minutes chatting with the television host, Mr. Jobs asks where the restroom is, saying he is “ready to throw up at any moment.” A producer can be heard in the background saying he “is joking,” to which Mr. Jobs takes a sip of water and replies, “I’m not joking.”

Perhaps there is hope yet for me...

Steve Jobs

Apple released this letter from Steve Jobs on Wednesday as the company announced that he was stepping down from the post of chief executive:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as C.E.O. of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as C.E.O. of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

—Steve
