More researched recently surfaced further detailing personality profiles of daily Twitter users. This time, the findings hit a bit more personal note as they relate heavy Twitter usage to shorter relationships and more "self-gratification." The findings, published by a leading dating website (
OkCupid.com), were derived from a sample of 833,987 users of the dating website and compared those who used Twitter everyday with the generic category of "everybody else."
Daily Twitter users aged 18 to 24 averaged between 9-12 months per relationship while everyone else the same age group averaged between 10-13 months per relationship. Daily Twitter users aged 40 to 50 averaged 15 months per relationship while "everyone else" had relationships lasting between 16-17 months.
The survey gave no reason as to why those who use Twitter on a daily basis would be likely to experience shorter romantic attachments. However,
seperate studies have generally concluded that frequent Twitter display signs of narcissism and chauvinism in their online habits (for example, 90% of Twitter updates come from just 10% of the Twitter users. Additionally, this top-10% tends not to follow females). Unfortunately, we have no way to tell who's dumping who here; whether the Twitterati are simply more
annoying partners or if they're the ones jumping off the wagon first.
In a separate survey, the dating company's report found that the odds that daily Twitter users aged 18-24 masturbated, or reported they were masturbating, on any day across all gender groups were 2:1, while the odds of "everyone else" across the same age group doing the same were significantly lower—about 1.6:1.
