You're looking at the FIRST issue of The Wall Street Journal from July 8, 1889 — you could get a copy for two cents. According to the Speakeasy, the first issue was four pages long and was aimed at "operators, bankers and capitalists." The July 8, 2011 edition of the paper was 54 pages and costs two dollars.
It’s a little blurry, but we can see that there are several stories on the “markets,” and one headline that reads, “Bankers Exerting Their Powers.”
Funny how some things just don't change...

Nice piece Chris! I just have one addendum. The WSJ has changed considerably since Murdoch acquired it. Their editorial board has moved away from a pure economics viewpoint and started pushing Murdoch's personal political and social agenda. Anyway - it's kind of sad to see an institution like the WSJ corrupted.
