This morning Mark Zukerberg made history as the first person ever to ring the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange in a hoody and jeans. As he stood there, watching his net worth rise to over 32 billion dollars, his 8-year-old social media company was also making history: as the 3rd largest IPO in our nation's history and perhaps the #1 largest IPO by pop culture standards.
Where this public offering will take Facebook and the direction of social media, has yet to be seen. Undoubtedly, we will notice a more concerted effort by Facebook to monetize our attention to the network, since Facebook's yearly earnings are barely north of 1 billion, while company's stock value is soaring at 104 billion — over 100 times its annual revenue.
