04.28.09 Guy gets avalanched... and the crowd goes wild!

By Thoughtshaker Folks

Typically it's good etiquette not to cheer when your buddy gets swept away in an avalanche. Unfortunately this little rule was overlooked this past weekend when a skier got caught in a slide on the most extreme East Coast backcountry ski slope, Tuckerman's Ravine. The previous Wednesday & Thursday, the summit received 13.8 inches of snow with high winds. The resulting effect was that enough snow blew in the ravine from unstable slabs as deep as 3 to 4 feet.

The video above shows a bluebird Saturday in New Hampshire (just two days after the dump) with loads of skiers rolling the dice on the 50+ degree slopes of the popular Mt. Washington backcountry bowl. Thank god no one was hurt, however it did occure to me that this may be precise reason why people cheered as the hapless individual rode the slide out—they're scarily unfamiliar with the typical consequences associated with slides. I don't see anyone running toward the victim or pulling out their avy gear to prepare a search... check out the below video to see how the scenario could have turned out differently.
