05.12.09 Spring Skiing in the Tetons

By Chris D.

Static 5

Sunday, two friends and myself woke up at 4AM to tackle the classic spring ski mountaineering objective of Static Peak. Located in Grand Teton National Park and due to Big Horn Sheep winter habitat, the peak is only open April - mid December, making a descent with good snow coverage relegated to narrow early or late season windows. In our case, we were able to park at Whitegrass Ranch Junction (shaving 3/4 mile off our approach) and booted much of the way up Static Draw and the mountain itself. Thankfully, by the time we were skiing, east-facing aspects had been perfectly thawed to relinquish buttery corn on top of a well-established base all the way back to the valley floor.

At 10:30AM, the snow had turned from hard styrofoam to yummy cream cheese.

A tasty shot off the northwest face of Wimpies... next time.
