05.16.09 Hulu Rises

By Chris D. 2 comments

Well, it looks like YouTube is still holding onto its lead for No. 1 video Web brand on the web. By A LOT. As of last month, YouTube commanded almost 60 per cent of all video web streams, with the remaining forty per cent being hungrily devoured by competitors such as Hulu, Yahoo! and FOX.

In April alone, Nielson reported over 9 billion video streams consumed over the web, 5.5 of which belonged to YouTube. Other than the fact that YouTube completely dominates web video, the other notable statistic was with Hulu. Continuing its breakneck growth trajectory, Hulu increased 490 per cent in total streams year-over-year, from 63.2 million in April 2008 to 373.3 million in April 2009.

Other than portending a potential new video giant in years to come, the popularity of Hulu more importantly indicates a tidal change in consumers' viewing habits online. Whereas the traditional "YouTube-style" viewer tends to consume video in short clips, Hulu is proving that people will consume longer video segments, such as full-length movies & TV shows, in an online streaming format (as opposed to downloaded or on a traditional television).

    Ed. Note.

Hulu disputes Nielson's numbers, claiming their viewership is actually much higher than reported.

The problem with Hulu is that it is only for the USA. If/When it opens up to the rest of the world, it's numbers will shoot up more.
