05.17.09 A Final Waltz That Wasn't

By Chris D.

Hours after hearing of the French composer Maurice Jarre passing a sociology major at Dublin University taking a class about the spread of information on the Internet contributed the following quote to Jarre's Wikipedia page attributing it to the deceased man:

"One could say my life itself has been one long soundtrack. Music was my life, music brought me to life, and music is how I will be remembered long after I leave this life. When I die there will be a final waltz playing in my head that only I can hear."

In a result that is both shocking and not surprising at all, outlets across the globe, including The Guardian, picked up the bogus quote and used it in obituaries honoring Jarre.

Herein lies the moral: Social media matters as more and more mainstream news outlets are monitoring information broken on blogs, social media sites and wikis. HOWEVER, treat all forms of consumer-generated-media for what they are... a free-for-all information orgy always in need of fact-checking.

As for the kid, I really hope he got an A.
